Birthday Dresstimony 2023 💃

I was worried about what to wear to my party. I had the type of dress I wanted pictured in my mind, but I didn’t know the wording for it or where to find it.

I even asked my friend who does wardrobe styling professionally if while she was out and about on the job, she could see if she found anything and I’d pay her back, but within the constraints of my limited budget and the stores she needed to visit for work, even she didn’t find what I needed.

I stressed and obsessed.

Then, the day before I found my dress, I read in Jesus Storybook Bible about how Jesus dresses the wildflowers, as based on Matthew 6. They don’t have to worry about what they’re going to wear. It had silly illustrations of flowers on a hillside holding up dresses on hangers. Totally not necessary; God dresses them!

The next day, exactly one week before my party, I surrendered. I told God if I had to wear regular clothes I would. I felt the Lord bring to mind “Your Love is Strong” by Jon Foreman. I sang and danced to it, barefoot outside. It says,

I walk to the meadow and stare at the flowers, Better dressed than any girl on her wedding day. So why should I worry? Why do I freak out? God knows what I need. You know what I need.”

I resigned myself to quit looking. God knew what I needed; He would provide.

(I also thought in the back of my mind that I might ask my wardrobe stylist friend to look again, maybe with more example pictures, but I knew that also might be a long shot since she was traveling and busy on set. Plus, I wouldn’t be able to meet with her until the day of my party, without having seen them in person or tried them on previously, which wasn’t ideal, but — however God wanted to do it!)

Right after that, on my YouTube, next to the rectangle where “Your Love is Strong” had just played, I saw an ad for “mother of the bride dresses.” I’m not a mother of the bride (that would be MANY years down the road, as I don’t even have kids yet 🤪) and the dress in the picture wasn’t at all what I was going for, but for some reason I felt drawn to click.

Very quickly, I found this dress — the first one shown in its category.

Within my budget and just what I was looking for.

God clothes the flowers of the field. And God clothes me.

—Part 2—

The dress was supposed to arrive on Monday. It was Tuesday, then Wednesday. I looked up reviews online about the company and was concerned to see that they sometimes deliver weeks late, and even then, it’s sometimes not what the buyer ordered!

Would I need to go back to square one?

At the least, I could wear the dress Anthony had given me for our most recent anniversary, which I had never worn, but then what would I wear for our family dinner on my actual birthday… “First world problems,” I know, but it mattered to me!

And as one of my friends spoke to me at my birthday party this year, God cares about the details of my life (and of your life, too).

Thankfully, just when I was sitting near the front door of my house, worried about when my dress would arrive, I received the notification that it had been dropped off. I went outside my front door and there was the package! I put it on and it was perfect.

God came through, just in time. As He always does.

“Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?

“So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field ... will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

“Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”

— Matthew 6:25-33
